What is cystoscopy?
Cystoscopy is a process to check the inner lining of the bladder and urethra. Cystoscope is used to perform Cystoscopy. It is a device inserted through urethra to advance into the bladder. There may be various reasons to undergo the cystoscopy.
Cystoscopy is prescribed for following reasons:
- Cystoscopy can help to investigate causes of signs and symptoms including blood in urine, urinary incontinence, pelvic pain, overactive bladder and dysuria (painful urination).
- Cystoscopy can help to determine the causes of frequent UTIs.
- Cystoscopy can help to diagnose diseases and conditions in the bladder like bladder cancer, bladder stones and cystitis bladder inflammation.
- Cystoscopy is carried out to diagnose enlarged prostate.
The doctor may also conduct ureteroscopy along with cystoscopy. Ureteroscopy examines the tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder or ureters. A cystoscopy can reveal the following conditions:
- Blockages
- Enlarged prostate gland
- Non-cancerous tumors or stones
- Problems with the ureters
- Bladder cancer
Diagnosis
A cystoscope is inserted in the urethra after emptying the bladder. It takes 5 to 10 minutes in the examination but it may take up to 15 to 30 minutes depending upon the type of anesthesia being used.
Colonoscopy can be performed if piles suggest another digestive system disease or risk factors for colorectal cancer.
