What is Pilonidal Sinus?
Pilonidal Sinus is a skin infection in the sacrococcygeal region. The name is derived as Pilus means hair and nidal means nest. Therefore it can also be defined as a narrow opening in the skin where the cavity or opening is filled with nests of hair.
Pilonidal Sinus can be inflamed and non-inflamed. The non-inflamed Pilonidal Sinus is known as Pilonidal Cyst. It is more common in men with regular sitting jobs. The inflamed Pilonidal Sinus may lead to Pilonidal abscess.
Pilonidal Sinus can be hereditary, congenital disorders and some are generally prone to this. Skin and perineal bacteria may also lead to Pilonidal Sinus.

Diagnosis
The diagnosis of Pilonidal Sinus is pretty simple. The proctologist will diagnose with the help of physical examination. Although it’s not required in most cases, proctologists may prescribe for skin biopsy as well in special conditions.

Surgery
