What is Rectal Prolapse?
When the large intestine protrude from the anus, the condition is known as rectal prolapse. Rectal prolapse may lead to fecal incontinence. Elderly women are more prone to rectal prolapse but it may happen to men or women devoid of any age.
- Fecal incontinence
- Leakage of blood or pus from the anus
- Anal pain, itching, burning and bleeding
- Feeling of not being able to empty the bowels completely
- Red tissues that protrude out of the anus
- Chronic constipation or chronic diarrhea
- Long-term history of straining during bowel movement
- Injury to pelvic area or anal region
- Weak anal sphincter
- Malnutrition
Diagnosis
Physical examinations are done in order to diagnose the Rectal prolapse. You may need to squat, strain or enact the bowel action for the diagnosis. Colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy or anal ultrasound may be used to check for ulcers, polyps or tumors in the rectum.


Surgery
Rectal prolapse have two kind of surgeries:
Abdominal Repair: It is an open surgery to place the rectum back in place. In case of chronic constipation, part of the colon may be removed.
Laparoscopic rectopexy: It is an advanced form of abdominal repair where a small incision is made to introduce the laparoscope. With the help of a camera attached to the laparoscope, the doctor continues the surgery to place the rectum back in place.
