What is Septoplasty?
Septum is the space between the two nostrils. Septoplasty is the surgical procedure to straighten the bones of the septum. A bent or crooked nasal septum is also known as deviated nasal septum. Generally it’s a common problem and goes unnoticed. But in case of severe deviation in nasal septum, surgery is required to prevent the blockage of nasal flow. Blockage of nasal flow may lead to problems in breathing whereas severely bent nasal septum can cause dryness in nasal cavity.
- Difficulty breathing through the nose
- Nasal congestion which is apparent on one side
- Recurrent sinus infections
- Nosebleeds
- Headache
- Defect in the septum during fetal development and is apparent at birth
- Injuries that may cause the nasal septum to be moved out of position
- Aging and its effect on the structure of the nose
- Narrowing of the nasal passage due to long term swelling and irritation in the nasal cavity
Diagnosis
An expert ENT can prescribe if your deviated nasal septum requires septoplasty or not. The expert can examine whether the symptoms are getting improved or worse. Physical examination via the nostrils is required to diagnose the need of septoplasty and criticality of the situation.
